Tutorial #4 - Other Directories: ls, cp

1. Log on to UNIX if needed. Display the name of the working

directory.

2. Try to display long listings of the root (/) and /usr directories; if

you are successful, try successive listings with the -C, -F, -R, and

-b options. What do they each produce?

3. Display the long listing of the /dev directory.

4. If you know the userid of another person in your group, display

the long listing of that person's home directory (i.e. $ ls -l ../userid ).

5. Try to copy a file (not a directory) from another user's directory

to your own. Name it save.

6.If you were successful, try to copy this.month from your directory

to the directory of that other user; name it from.userid, using your

own userid.

If it doesn't work:

A. For question 5, you may not have appropriate access to any other
user directories; don't worry if you are unable to access other directories.
Some installations require much security amongst their users.
