Highline Community College Pentium III UNIX (Linux) System
Login Instructions
Using the internet to get access to the Pentium III UNIX (Linux) System requires a secure
client: ssh The host address is: ned.highline.edu.
You may use your web browser, ssh client directly on your local (or home) computer
system once a SLIP or PPP internet session has been established to connect to the internet. Those
with DSL or Cable Modems are always connected to the internet. For example:
1. When connecting via ssh from a UNIX System,
establish the connection via: or with ssh via:
$ ssh youruserid@ned.highline.edu
rkatz@ned.highline.edu's password:
This is where you specify your personal user ID given by the instructor or the ICC Lab manager once you've registered. You
will then prompted for your password. From that point on, read and follow the on-screen
instructions.
2. If you get a login: prompt, Type: «youruserid» <Enter> to establish a login to the ned System.
(Note: <Enter> means press the key with "Enter" or the "Return" symbol on it.)
3. The ned system will respond with via ssh, respectively:
youruserid@ned.highline.edu's password:
4. Type: yourpassword <Enter> to complete the login to the UNIX (Linux) ned System.
(Note: Your password will not show as you type the characters. This is normal)
5. If the number of logins to the ned System is below the maximum, shortly you will
see:

At this point, you have successfully logged in. The $ represents a prompt for you to type a UNIX
command. You will learn many commands to type during the first and all other weeks of the class.
