Getting Help

        How this course works

This is a once a week in person course. You are expected to
attend each class session. If you miss a session, you will
miss a significant amount of material. As a courtesy and as
a lecture aid, the class handouts will be on these web pages.
The Course content is about the Perl Programming Language.

Students are strongly encouraged to send messages to the
instructor, as necessary, to clarify the information presented.

Assignments are given and expected to be completed and returned
both by mail and in printed form to the instructor. These will
be graded and annotated and returned to the student. Likewise
            for tests.

At the end of the course, after the Final is graded, you will
receive a grade for the work done and be eligible to take other
more advanced classes relating to UNIX

        A Unix Question

            - Search your text references to find out how a command works
            - Search the on-line man command to find out how a command works
                on the HP-UX System here.
            - Ask the Instructor if you wish to find out how a command
works on some other UNIX System of interest.
            - Experiment with commands during your login sessions (learn by
                doing).
            - It usually helps to interpret information literally.

        A Connection Question

            - For Modems: Each modem assumes a 8 bit, even parity,
One Stop bit. The Phone numbers are: (206) 870-9621 (9600 Baud),
                (206) 870-0447 (2400 Baud), and (206) 824-5766 (2400 Baud)
Remember to prefix the number with *70, if your phone line has
                the call waiting attribute.
            - For Slip or PPP: This system does not run Slip or PPP. From
your own Internet provider, you can access this system
(cis.highline.ctc.edu) via telnet or some other terminal
		emulation program.
            - For Internet: Issue the telnet command if accessing from some
other UNIX system, or launch some terminal emulation program,
if accessing from some other operating system.
	    - If you are running a graphical browser, you can try the URL:
		telnet:cis.highline.ctc.edu
            - For other connectivity questions, contact the instructor.

        A Mail Question

            - Use the man command if you are using mail or mailx
            - If you are using another mail agent (pine, elm, eudora) read
the documentation or man pages that come with that program on
                your system.
            - For other mail questions, contact the instructor.

Accessing Other Students In This Course

            - Speak to them around class sessions and get their Userid.
            - With the Userid available, use the command: mailx <Userid>
to send a message to that student.

        Accessing The Instructor

            - Send a message to katz@cis.highline.ctc.edu via:
                $ mail katz@cis.highline.ctc.edu < yourmessagefile
This will be a private, unbroadcast message.

        A Totally Unrelated Question

            - Try to answer it yourself
            - Call the Seattle Public Library Quick Information Librarian
            - Look it up on the World Wide Web
            - Ask me. See Accessing the Instructor
